The desire to be despised

John 8 49 Jesus answered, “I have not a demon; but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me. 50 Yet I do not seek my own glory; there is One who seeks it and he will be the judge. 54 Jesus answered, “If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is your God.   Whenever you are honored or desire to be honored, you will be confused; and you will groan: Oh Lord! You were denounced as evil and I am praised as good? Is there anything more painful? Then your desire to be honored by the world will vanish, and you'll want to be despised, in conformity to the Lord; and following Him is a great honor. John of Avila - Audi Filia

Lent

By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert. Satan tempts him three times, seeking to compromise his filial attitude toward God. Christ reveals himself as God's Servant, totally obedient to the divine will. Jesus is the new Adam who remained faithful just where the first Adam had given in to temptation. Jesus' temptation reveals the way in which the Son of God is Messiah. food/fasting (Man shall not live by bread alone) possesions/almsgiving (You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only shall you serve) honor/prayer (You shall not tempt the Lord your God) Jesus' victory over the tempter in the desert anticipates victory at the Passion, the supreme act of obedience of his filial love for the Father.
